Arts Hub presents Sonder: Transformations, a micro theatre festival performed at the Seventies Smash House, a house tucked away in Albuquerque’s Nob Hill area. The festival is a collection of five new performances from prominent Albuquerque performers Amanda Machon, Hakim Bellamy, Ericka Olvera, Cortney Baca, Christina Cavaleri, and Magdeline Gallegos. Each performance explores the concept of transmogrification- i.e., “to change or alter greatly and often with grotesque or humorous effect.”
Micro theater is a form of performance popularized in Europe, most prominently by “Microteatro” in Spain. The style has been gaining popularity in cities across the U.S. in recent years and returns to Albuquerque for two exciting weeks. In Sonder: Transformations audience members move from room-to-room in groups of ten as they experience each piece in intimate settings. Unlike traditional theater, audience members will be within arm’s length of each performer and experience the raw, visceral nature of each performance in ways that other styles do not typically allow.
The venue itself is a character all on its own. Whether audiences descend a stunningly glittered staircase to the basement, climb the spiral staircase past the chandelier, or venture into the indoor pool room the atmosphere itself will give a magical feel to the evening.
The plays vary in style with a mix of humor, physicality, poetic verse, and devastatingly personal Audiences will be treated to an eclectic mix of performers including the lead singer of Red Light Cameras (Machon), Albuquerque’s inaugural poet laureate (Bellamy), the Executive Director of Blackout Theatre (Olvera), aerialists with AirDance NM (Baca and Cavaleri), and the owner of the film/media company Elixir Productions (Gallegos). Each performer brings unique talents to the festival. Sonder: Transformations promises to be an engaging and unique experience unlike anything else in New Mexico.
